13th Annual Tyler Art Market

Temple students and alumni showcase their works at this all-day art market where the proceeds from their sales go directly to local artists

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the Tyler School of Art and Architecture hosted the 13th Annual Art Market at Temple University’s Main Campus. Coinciding with Homecoming and Family Weekend, this market is one of many exciting events happening on campus during that weekend. The market is free to enter and open to the public, so anyone can go in to check out the wonderful display of artwork!

“The art market is a great way to interact with the community and see everyone’s individuality through their mediums and art,” said Zachary Denma, a sophomore sociology major with an art minor.

In this day-long showcase from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., all sorts of artwork is sold at different vendor stations. The event features the work of alumni as well as current student artists. They aim to bring in a diverse pool of students and young alumni by considering factors such as craftsmanship and the variety of products. All of the proceeds that are made from the sale of their products at the market go towards the local artists.

“I love contributing to the art market because it allows me and my peers to sell our work at low stakes while meeting new people and having a good time,” said Alexis Kamat, a senior printmaking major with an art history minor.

The art market features a wide array of vendors presenting a variety of mediums, including ceramics, glassblowing, jewelry making, textiles, design and illustrations, as well as contributions from the Tyler Photo Club, Tyler Print Guild and the Artists of Color Collective.

“We don’t always get the opportunity to interact with each other, especially from other departments because the school year can get hectic. So, it’s nice having this designated time to see what my friends and peers are up to and the artwork other people are putting out,” said Lauryn May, a junior fibers and material studies major. She also mentioned how this event is a fun community gathering opportunity that brings the school together.

Events on campus such as this one allow students like May to reconnect with many that they haven’t seen in a long time. Amid the business of one’s daily life, this art market works to connect people, bringing together alumni and current students alike.

“The art market is a fun way for us to sell stuff, and be able to share our work with parents, alumni, and students,” Kathryn Lundeen, a junior glass major, said.

The Tyler Alumni Relations team collaborates to coordinate this event each year. The fee that the vendors pay to participate in the market goes towards a scholarship for Tyler School of Art students.
